CHAPTER 2

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. Violet stirred in Dominic’s arms, her body pleasantly sore from the night before. She snuggled closer to him, savoring the feeling of his warmth, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her ear.

For a few blissful moments, she allowed herself to forget about the outside world, to just be in the moment with the man she loved. But reality, as always, had a way of intruding.

Dominic’s phone buzzed on the nightstand, a sharp reminder that the world beyond their sanctuary still existed. He reached for it, his movements careful not to disturb her, but Violet could feel the tension in his body as he read the message.

“Is everything okay?” she asked, her voice still heavy with sleep.

Dominic sighed, setting the phone back down with a look of frustration. “There’s something I need to take care of. A meeting I can’t avoid.”

Violet’s heart sank at the words. She knew what “meetings” like these entailed, knew that despite his promises to step back, Dominic was still deeply entrenched in the dangerous world he had built.

“Do you have to go?” she asked, hating the way her voice sounded so small, so pleading.

“I’m afraid so,” Dominic replied, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “But I’ll be back soon. And when I am, we can spend the rest of the day together, just the two of us.”

Violet forced a smile, nodding even though her heart wasn’t in it. “Okay.”

Dominic leaned down to kiss her, a lingering, tender kiss that made her wish they could stay in bed forever, away from the dangers and complications of his world. But when he pulled back, she saw the resolve in his eyes, the determination that had always been a part of him.

“I’ll be back before you know it,” he promised, giving her one last kiss before he slipped out of bed.

Violet watched him dress, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. She knew Dominic was trying to protect her, trying to shield her from the darker aspects of his life, but it was hard not to feel the growing distance between them. Every time he walked out the door, she couldn’t shake the fear that he might not come back.

She waited until he was gone before getting out of bed, pulling on one of his shirts and heading to the kitchen to make herself some coffee. As she stood by the counter, waiting for the coffee to brew, her thoughts drifted back to the night before, to the way Dominic had touched her, held her, made her feel like she was the only thing that mattered.

But even in those moments of passion, there had been a part of her that couldn’t fully relax, couldn’t fully let go of the fear that gnawed at her. It was a fear she had tried to ignore, tried to push aside, but it was always there, lurking in the back of her mind.

The coffee maker beeped, pulling her out of her thoughts.
